Monkey Time at the Grupo Mayan Resorts’ Locations

How wonderful and intelligent these animals are!

Without a doubt, the best place where they can live and grow-up is in their own environment, surrounded by big green areas and in company of similar animals like them - primates, in tropical weather.

That is why the Grupo Mayan experts do not recommend buying these animals as domestic pets, even though you may think you will do your best to take care of them. Yes, they are very intelligent, that is why they have been used in experiments or trained to be exposed in circuses and unfortunately, sometimes they are treated badly even tortured so that they perform certain tasks or tricks.

It is very curious that apparently monkeys and humans have characteristics that make them very similar as primates, based on Darwin’s theory, which claims that apes - the famous “missing link”, are human’s ancestors. Obviously, if we are drawn to that theory, we cannot deny there are resemblances anatomically speaking. There are those who agree monkeys are able to reason and others definitely do not believe so.

The Grupo Mayan Resorts experts suggest just visiting these animals at the zoo, in ecological parks where they can be free and not under captivity. If you keep these animals with you, no matter if you have a big house, a nice garden or maybe in an environment that monkeys’ call for; inevitably, there will come a time that this primate will reach a certain age that according to their animal needs, they could react instinctively and they could attack you or quite simply, they will require to go back to their natural habitat.

It is very important to respect nature, say our Grupo Mayan experts; and they plea that you thoroughly consider the decision of getting pet monkeys, as they also pose a risk to public health and safety through highly contagious illness/diseases such as Herpes B, hepatitis, intestinal pathogens and general injuries to both humans and monkeys. Check as well your local laws about it.

All that being said, It is better to let them be in their own community outdoors, to be able to continue enjoying their “monkey business”.

If you are planning a vacation at the Grupo Mayan Resorts located in Riviera Maya, do not miss the opportunity to visit some of the most famous ecological parks in that area, where you can find monkeys in their own environment.

Grupo Mayan’s Recommendations to Own a Multicolored Parrot

If you want to have an exotic pet which will brighten your days, the Grupo Mayan experts recommend parrots. They are becoming popular household pets because of their beautiful effervescent colors, their intelligence, their affectionate nature and some of them are very sociable. They also have a special ability to imitate human speech and other sounds, so this makes them fun to be with.

Though, the Grupo Mayan experts state that you must keep in mind that they do need to be cared for with great responsibility, and to avoid any regrets about acquiring a parrot, you must consider certain things before getting one.

As there are many different types of parrots, you can start by checking all of them out to select the one that would fit your lifestyle. Smaller species are easier to handle and they still have great qualities.

Also, you need to consider the space for their home. Their cages need to be spacious and they must have a play stand and areas to play. This will be a defining factor as to the size of your parrot. However, you must consider that they like to spend time outside of their cages everyday. So supervision and a safe environment are a must as well.

Then, as they are rewarding companions, the Grupo Mayan experts recommend that if you have children at home, teach them how to play with their pet parrot safely and keep their distance when needed. If you have other pets at home, consider if your parrot will be safe; as dogs, cats, reptiles and ferrets may consider them food or they would simply attack them. This must be well thought-out before getting a parrot.

As for their eating habits, that is quite simple as they usually feed of seeds, fruits and juices. Avoid at all costs toxic items that could be potentially harmful to them, like avocados, anything with chocolate or caffeine, certain plants and direct exposure to fumes or scented aromas.

Research well to provide a secure atmosphere for your parrot, and if you take this into consideration, if you can give them daily quality time and care for their health, the Grupo Mayan experts guarantee that you will be able to enjoy your pet parrot for many years to come.

Grupo Mayan’s Recommendations to have a Ferret as a Pet

In recent days, it has become usual for some people to select ferrets as pets. They are known to be playful and quite lovable. The Grupo Mayan experts even point out they may be more clever than cats and dogs! One thing for sure is that they are fun to be with and they continue to be active throughout the years. They have a unique personality.

The Grupo Mayan Resorts experts recommend that the ideal age to get one should be around 3 months old. It will adapt better to you. Remember vaccines are a must, as well as regular visits to the veterinarian.

If you are not considering breeding your ferret, neutering is suggested by the Grupo Mayan experts. Another thing to consider is that if you have a busy life, you may opt to get more than one ferret, as they like to have someone to play around with and they like to have many things to do. Otherwise, they do like to have their owners all to themselves.

The Grupo Mayan Resorts experts say that ferrets are known to be carnivorous. Although they can be feed with specialized dry food you can find at pet stores; though make sure it contains high protein and minimum fat. Bear in mind they are lactose-intolerant, so they cannot be given milk to drink. They should always have plenty of fresh water.

They are very curious and even though a specialized cage is recommended, they must be allowed to run around the house, always keeping an eye on them. You need to take several safety measures to provide them a safe environment. They can fit into small places and they can get harmed if not supervised. The Grupo Mayan experts state that ferrets also like to bite on everything and eat it, so be careful not to leave anything at sight that could be toxic or dangerous for them to swallow.

As for training them to use a litter box, the Grupo Mayan Resorts experts state that they need to have easy access to it. They have short legs, so one end of the box needs to be low and the rest of the box should have high sides. You can find at pet stores suitable boxes specially created for ferrets. Use wood based litter fillings.

The Grupo Mayan experts know that if you follow these tips and further investigate about how to take care of your ferret, you are guaranteed to enjoy many years with your little rascal.

Grupo Mayan’s Sweet Home for the Flamingo

The Grupo Mayan Resorts experts tell us, there are 5 different species of flamingoes in the world. In Mexico, in the north of the Yucatan peninsula, from Celestum to Rio Lagartos, the pink flamingo nests, feeds and reproduces.

They live in wetlands, shallow or coastal lagoons, where the salinity is high for the proliferation of microorganisms good for their nourishment; they filter these from the water with their peak. These make great groups called colonies. When they are ready to nest, they mate by means of a ritual dance where the males move before the females, they march in a group from one side to the other, moving their head, calling and cleaning. They are monogamous, says the Grupo Mayan experts; they choose their couple and they copulate only with her in order to have their offspring.

The nest is made of mud, a little mount in form of a volcano that takes the flamingoes 6 weeks to build and both parents take turns hatching the egg from 26 to 31 days. They are born covered with white feathers and then they change to grey ones. Until they reach adulthood, the characteristic brilliant pink appears. This color derives from their diet high in alpha and beta carotenes.

Quite different from other birds, as noted by the Grupo Mayan Resorts experts, they do not regurgitate their food for their offspring, but they feed them with a liquid substance called goiter milk, a secretion from the upper part of the digestive tract, very rich in fat and proteins; secreted by males as well as by females.

This species is considered endangered due to the fragile conditions of their habitat, vulnerable to natural phenomena, floods and mainly to the man. Their earth is used for other purposes, polluting and altering the water depth, salinity and quality.

With the purpose of protecting the pink flamingo and in support to the environment, Grupo Mayan created at The Grand Mayan Riviera Maya an area for flamingoes that hosts 20 of them and it is open to the guest. It is such a wonderful and exciting experience that we recommend you not to miss.

The Universe of the Crocodiles –Grupo Mayan Efforts for a Sustainable Tourism

At the Grupo Mayan resorts, you will be able to find magnificent specimens of this reptile, either at their natural habitat or in special secure areas were they are being taken care of by the specialized Mayan Resorts’ staff.

Crocodiles are reproduced by means of eggs. A couple of months after mating, the female lays her eggs, seeking a safe place near the water. She digs a hole with her hind legs and deposits between 20-60 eggs in the nest.  They are kept warm with the heat generated by decomposing vegetation.

After 75 days, the babies start to hatch. They measure around 22 cm and under natural conditions, can grow from 2 to 2.5 cm a month.

-Make any kind of noise that may disturb them

-Bang on the glass partition

-Lean on or jump over the guardrail

-Touch or grab them

Tips for those Who Own Pet Snakes

You are either afraid of snakes as most people, or you are curious about snakes.  This is evident in those who have a snake for a pet.  Grupo Mayan experts reveal that the number of snake owners is not as few as most people would believe.  The numbers continue to grow each year.

Snakes may be okay out in the wild, but in captivity, it is a different thing.  Grupo Mayan experts recommend that you do some research on the snake before you decide to buy one for a pet.  Take, for example, the scenario that you get a boa. You have seen boas being used in movies and other forms of entertainment such as magic shows and dances.  Many people like the boa because typically they do no bite.  Boas take care of their prey by capturing them and squeezing the prey to death.  These snakes do not like live food.

If you have never owned a snake, Grupo Mayan experts suggest that you do not buy a boa.  Buy something else, a different type of snake.  Getting a boa may be a good experience but in the end, it may not be the best choice.

Before you buy a snake, consider the snakeís size because a snakeís growth can depend on their environment.  You do not want to house the snake in a too small a cage as that will restrain its full potential growth and if you use a cage that is too large, you will cause the snake to over grow. This will lengthen the snakeís life span, and it may develop health problems as it grows past its normal life span.

You need to do your research about snakes if you decide to buy one.  You want to get a snake that is docile and not very likely to attack you or anyone else in your home either.  Most reptiles are docile reveals Grupo Mayan experts.  However, there are exceptions.  If you plan to take your snake with you on vacation, you definitely need to check on the hotel or resorts policy.  You will find that most will not allow you to bring a snake.  If one does, do not forget to check with the airline on its policy concerning transportation.

No matter what type of snake you may end up with, be sure to ask plenty of questions and learn all that you can about your new pet.

Tips on Things Your Dog should not Eat

We all know that there are household products that can be deadly to pets as well as humans.  Something that can be deadly to your dog is people food.  Grupo Mayan experts reveal that food that is available for dogs is based on the digestive needs of the animal.    The food that a dogís system is design to digest is considerably different from the food humans consume.

Most dogs are very finicky about the food they eat.  While it would be nice to have the dog going around picking all the food that falls on the floor that would be very bad for the dog.  To the contrary, picking up food (before the dog finds it) that has fallen to the floor is our job.

Our food supply goes through a process that includes the addition of some chemicals and preservatives.  This food is not good for us much less our dogs as they have a much weaker immune system than we do.

Chocolate is harmless to human beings but it is deadly to a dog.  In fact, chocolate has noted benefits for humans. The problem with chocolate is alkaloids.  While alkaloids does nothing for humans, it is deadly for a dog as their digestive tract is designed much differently than humans.  Their digestive tract will not digest chocolate so it sits in the stomach and almost right away, it will make the dog sick and eventually kill the dog.

There is a host of other food not suitable for a dog and one of those foods is dairy products.  Dairy products are sometimes hard for a human to digest but to a dog it can be as deadly as alkaloids.

Grupo Mayan experts warn that one other item that can be very dangerous to our pets is anti-freeze.  It may leak out of our automobile and drip onto the driveway.  Anti-freeze has no odour and is sweet to the taste.  This chemical has been responsible for many deaths in dogs and cats.

If you have children, dogs or cats, check your chemical storage areas and make sure all chemicals are safely stored away.  Grupo Mayan experts suggest that everyone can help to keep their dog healthier by protecting them from foods they should not eat.  With a little work, there is no reason this should not be possible for all pet owners.

You are Responsible for Your Dog Behaviour

A dog can be a great enjoyment for someoneís life.  Dogs are very loyal and they do not differentiate between groups.  What is hard to understand is why dog owners do not take responsibility for their pets.  Some dog owners do not treat their dogs properly and they claim to care about their pets.

Millions of dogs every year are euthanized because they have no home.  Many pet owners abuse their pets or just do not take care of their dogs.  These poor dogs end up in an animal shelter and often are euthanized due to a lack of space and resources.

Grupo Mayan experts recommend that if you are already a dog owner or you want to get a dog in the future, that you consider everything that comes with being a pet owner.

When you welcome a dog into the family, you have undertaken a big responsibility.  If you have the time to take care of a dog properly then adopt a dog.  Sometimes children request a dog.  Even if the child claims that, he or she will be responsible, as an adult it will ultimately fall on you.

Here are some tips that will assist you in making your choice for a dog.  These tips will also assist you after you get your new dog to your home.  The first step is to determine what you are looking for in a dog.  If you have children, you want a dog that is loveable and gentle to the children.  Grupo Mayan experts reveal that going to the animal shelter is a great way to find a dog.

While it is true that you may wind up with a dog that has been abused or neglected, your family may be the dogís hero as your family takes good care of that dog.  When you have made your selection on the dog of your choice, be sure to request the dogís medical records.  Once those records have been given to you, take the dog and the records with you to the vet.  Grupo Mayan experts recommend the dog be examined, and shots brought up to date.

Taking your dog to the vet on regular basis is part of being a responsible owner.  Make sure that your pet has all the nourishments the dog needs recommends Grupo Mayan experts.  If you find you are not able to afford all the expenses then perhaps you ought to reconsider owning a dog.

Tips to Help You Maintain Your Petís Good Health

Every pet owner wants the best for their pets as they do for their families.  Grupo Mayan experts want only the best for you and your family and offer some tips to help you maintain your petís good health.  Pets are a big part of families, and everyone wants to keep them around a long time.  Making sure that they are in good health is a positive action that everyone can do.

According to Grupo Mayan experts, we need to feed our pet good nutritious food. While foods taste good to us, the same applies to our pets.  However, the food must be healthy as well as taste good.  Just as we like to snack, pets like snacks too.  One point to remember is that our food is very much different from their food.  Their body system is not designed like ours therefore, they need different foods.  It may be a nice thing for you that your pet likes to eat your favourite food item.  However, that is not the smartest thing to do.

An unhealthy pet may be the result of the surroundings in the home.  For example, chemicals and their storage is a big problem for pets.  It is somewhat the same as having a small child around.  We need to safeguard the location of our chemical supplies against pets getting in to them.  Keep all chemicals locked up and accessible only to an adult.

One big factor, at home, that works against a petís good health is mold.  Mold in the home is a very unhealthy one for everyone, people and pets as well.  You need to call a professional to come and inspect the home and if there is mold found in the home have a professional treat the situation.

Many people believe they can treat mold with bleach.  However, according to the Grupo Mayan experts, the proper treatment is to have a professional come to the house and treat the situation with the proper chemicals designed to remove mold.  If mold is treated improperly, you may be able to get rid of visible mold, but you are putting your health and the health of your pet at risk by ignoring professional advice and treatment.  After the chemical cleaning is done, find out what is a good program to establish to guard your home from getting mold again.  Get on that program and maintain it to be sure the mold does not return.  A healthy home is a healthy home for both pets and human beings.

Helping Your Dog to Control the Impulse to Jump

Dogs love to display their emotions and affections, and they do so by jumping on you.  While many may enjoy having a dog jumping on them, not everyone thinks the same way.  Grupo Mayan experts reveal some tips to help you keep your dog under control especially when vacationing.

The reason it may be that the dog jumps on someone entering the house or a room may be the way you have raised the dog.  Dogs usually do what seems to work for them. If jumping on you will get them attention then that is what they will do.  Dogs will continue to do the same behaviour as long as it works for them.

Several options are available to dog owners to help them to alter the dogís behaviour.  One option is not to look straight at the dogís face when he or she is jumping around.  The dog will not think he or she has your attention and may not attempt the same action again.  Grupo Mayan experts recommend that you do not look at the dog but instead look away from the dog and order them to get down when they jump on you.  This acts as a form of re-enforcement.

Remember that when you are trying to retrain a dog. It will take time just as it does when you are training a young toddler.  The dog will stop jumping on you as soon as the dog can tell that this is no longer working.  The training lesson may take up to two weeks for the dog to learn this lesson.  The time span depends on each dog.  At the same time, everyone else that encounters the dog must behave the same way as you do or else all the work you put into the training will be wasted.

Keep in mind there may be a time when this treatment may not work.  Therefore, at that time get a spray bottle, fill it with water, and spray the dog in the face as you order him to stop jumping on you.  Make sure that you are still turning away from the dog while you are training the dog to stop jumping on you.  This training method may not be a convenient one for you.  However, you must do whatever gets the results you want.

Grupo Mayan experts caution dog owners to remember that every dog is different and some dogs may take longer to retrain with the new behaviour.
